The word "mawal" means "associated with" or "connected." In Arabic music, the mawal is a segment of vocal music, is sung by one singer, who may be accompanied by a melodic instrument (but never percussion). One of the characteristics of a mawal, is that normally is at the beginning of a song, and the vowels are pronounced much longer than normal.
The mawal has its roots in Arabic poetry. To interpret a
mawal, as in the taxim, we focus on the movements wave (or moles), in a smooth, elegant and sensual. The mawal is full of drama and expression, and that's something we have to convey our movements, but also the face and eyes.
